If so, which have you found to be easier to install and use, MAMP or Bitnami, particularly if you are also running the standalone version of WordPress? So, I am wondering.how does MAMP and MAMP Pro compare to the Bitnami WordPress stack?ĭoes anyone here have experience with both MAMP and the Bitnami WordPress stack? Even though Beltrán is assisting me in his forum, I still haven't been able to resolve some path issues. Over the past several days, I have been struggling with installing the PPC version of the Bitnami WordPress stack on an old Macintosh G4 mini-tower running Tiger 10.4.11. If you don't want to start using virtual machines (Vargrant with Virtualbox for example), there're numerous other options for full stack tools like Mamp (paid and free) with good support, including Desktop Server, AMPPS, and XAMPP to name a few. I wouldn't waist my time or money with Mamp Pro 4. But I have not gotten any responses from subsequent emails regarding tech support, and further licensing issues. I was able to get an email response initially to get the licensing issue partially resolved. Support for this product is almost nonexistent. I got permissions (403 forbidden), database errors "Error establishing database connection" and all sort of other problems.
Mamp pro 5 ssl upgrade#
To my regret, the upgrade broke all sites I currently had set up. Once Mamp Pro 4 was released, I was prompted for an upgrade every time I started Mamp in the usual obtrusive popup, despite checking the box "Skip this upgrade." I finally decided to do the upgrade and didn't think it would hurt anything. Then I was mainly use Mamp for the ability to set something up quickly as a temporary measure to test out a theme or plugin. As my needs become more advanced, I started using virtual machines to mimic the exact same environment as the production server, so there were no surprises after deployment. Mamp Pro 3 worked great for years, and I was generally happy with it. Big footprint - over one gigabyte of disk space for installation

might work if you uninstall version 3 and purchase Mamp Pro 4 full version and not as an upgrade.

Licensing issues - does not accept license key from Mamp Pro 3, so would not do this as an upgrade. No support - haven't gotten responses to email Have never been able to get Nginx to work Requires lots of configuration to get working properly Upgrade (version 3 to 4) does not work out of the box You may be pleasantly surprised - and relieved - as I have been. One great feature which I particularly like is the fact that once properly set up, Abyss automatically renews and installs Letsencrypt certificates with no intervention needed on your part.Īnyway, if you are tired of Appsolute's style, and the frustration and aggravation you suffer from lack of adequate support, consider switching to Abyss Web Server. However, if you can get past that, Abyss runs very smoothly with few hiccups. It is web-based, which means that you do everything in your web browser. Unlike MAMP PRO, Abyss Web Server is not a polished app with a macOS GUI. Granted, Abyss does not include mySQL, PHP, etc., but I installed the latest versions of mySQL and PHP on my own, with some help from Aprelium. Also, the Pro version of Abyss Web Server - called X2 instead of X1 - costs $60, which means you save $30 compared to MAMP PRO. The difference is like night from day, and, Aprelium provides excellent email support. MAMP PRO served me well for years, but three weeks ago, I decided to switch to Abyss Web Server. Now I see that they have jacked up the price of a new 6.0 installation by $30.00. It is very sporadic, and the solutions they do provide - if any - don't always work.īut what irks me the most, aside from the dismal support, is the way they try to force us to do things THEIR way, leaving us no choice in the matter. It wouldn't be so bad if Appsolute provided adequate tech support via email, but they don't. Everything was fine until they began making major changes around 5.7.0 changes so significant, that I had one problem after another, and one headache after another. After using MAMP PRO for at least the past nine years - since 0.9.x.x.
